Unexpected Benefits of LASIK Eye Surgery

What are the benefits of LASIK eye surgery? As EyeSmart notes, LASIK reshapes the cornea and changes its focusing power, which is why a majority of LASIK patients find their vision improved enough that they no longer need glasses or contact lenses. Many patients achieve 20/20 vision or better. These results can be long-lasting, and recovery from LASIK is fairly quick, with most patients reporting better vision within one day. Improved vision is the goal, but there can be many other unexpected benefits of LASIK eye surgery. Here are just a few.

Improved Vision at Night

As with any surgery, patients can experience different reactions afterward. Some LASIK patients find that they see halos or experience glare after surgery. These symptoms will generally fade away within the first 90 days. Afterwards, you may actually notice an improvement in your vision at night. According to a study by the Naval Medical Center in California, as reported in the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Journal, 2% to 7% of LASIK patients had a significant postoperative improvement in their performance in a night driving simulator.

Additional Lines of Sight

In some cases, patients with severe astigmatism or myopia have found that they gain additional lines of sight after having LASIK eye surgery. This may be a result of the refractive errors being corrected better by surgery than they can be by corrective lenses alone.

Better Peripheral Vision

LASIK can provide patients with better peripheral vision in addition to clearer overall vision. Again, this may be a result of not having to wear glasses, which can impede peripheral vision. Many patients report more and clearer levels of peripheral vision post-LASIK.

Reduced Allergy Symptoms

Can LASIK help alleviate allergy symptoms? According to an article from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, contacts lenses and the solutions used to clean them can sometimes cause severe allergic reactions in a wearer’s eyes. People with a history of allergies can more easily suffer from sensitivity or an allergic reaction. Getting rid of contact lenses by having LASIK eye surgery will remove the risk of these /sensitivities and allergies.

Savings of Money and Time

Although you have to pay the initial cost of LASIK, the savings will add up over the long run. Glasses and contact lenses cost hundreds of dollars each year and have to be changed along with your evolving prescription. In addition, proper care of your lenses can be time consuming. Patients who have LASIK and no longer require corrective lenses can see significant savings in time and money in just a few years.
