Light Adjustable Lens

What Is A Light Adjustable Lens?

The PreLex™ light-adjustable lens implants have revolutionized the treatment of cataracts and other refractive errors for Woodhams Eye Clinic patients.

PreLex™ light-adjustable lens implants are a type of intraocular lens that is implanted during PreLex™ (presbyopic lens exchange) and cataract surgery to correct refractive errors such as myopiahyperopia, and astigmatism. During the procedure, your surgeon will remove the natural lens in your eye and replace it with a multi-focal lens. These lenses are made of a special material that is sensitive to ultraviolet light and can be adjusted post-surgery to fine-tune the lens power and improve the patient’s vision. This technology allows Woodhams Eye Clinic surgeons to customize the lens power based on the patient’s specific needs, resulting in better outcomes and increased patient satisfaction.

Light Adjustable Lens Surgery

The Prelex™ light-adjustable lens implantation procedure involves several steps. The first step is to remove the cloudy lens, or cataract, from the patient’s eye. The surgeon then implants the light-adjustable lens, which is made of a special material that is sensitive to ultraviolet light. After implantation, the patient’s eye is exposed to ultraviolet light for a specific amount of time, which causes a chemical reaction in the lens material, altering its shape and changing its refractive power. The amount of time the lens is exposed to ultraviolet light can be adjusted, and the procedure can be repeated as necessary until the desired lens power is achieved.

The surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia, and the patient can usually return home the same day. The patient’s vision may be blurry immediately after surgery, but this typically improves over the following days and weeks as the eye heals.

Pros and Cons of Light-Adjustable Lens Implants

The main advantage of PreLex™ light-adjustable lens implants is their ability to fine-tune the lens power after surgery, which can result in better vision outcomes and increased patient satisfaction. This technology allows Woodhams Eye Clinic surgeons to customize the lens power based on the patient’s specific needs, resulting in more precise vision correction. Additionally, since the procedure is non-invasive and does not require a second surgery, it can be more cost-effective and less time-consuming than other methods of vision correction.

PreLex™ light-adjustable lens implants are a relatively new technology that has revolutionized the treatment of cataracts and other refractive errors. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved. These risks include infection, bleeding, swelling, and damage to the surrounding structures of the eye. Patients with pre-existing eye conditions or diseases may not be candidates for this procedure. Patients should discuss the risks and benefits of light-adjustable lens implantation with their eye doctor to determine if this procedure is right for them.
